Definition of "Absorption" |
Dissipation of radio or sound waves as they interact with matter. The absorbing of light waves without reflection or refraction. / Absorption is a range of wavelengths, frequencies or energies in the electromagnetic spectrum which are able to excite a particular transition in a substance. Different types of absorption bands appear in spectroscopy, ranging from MHz radio frequency NMR spectroscopy and all kinds of traditional absorption spectroscopy techniques to γ-ray energy Mossbauer spectroscopy. / Zener effect is a type of electrical breakdown in a reverse biased p-n diode in which the electric field enables tunneling of electrons from the valence to the conduction band of a semiconductor, leading to a large number of free minority carriers, which suddenly increase the reverse current. Zener breakdown is employed in a Zener diode. / (1) process that dissipates energy and causes a decrease in the amplitude and intensity of a propagating wave between an input and output reference plane. |
