Definition of "Amplitude Modulation" |
Any method of varying the amplitude of an electromagnetic carrier frequency in accordance with the intelligence to be transmitted. A modulation system which varies the amplitude of the carrier in step to the amplitude changes of a modulating signal. / Amplitude Modulation is a modulation technique used in electronic communication, most commonly for transmitting information via a radio carrier wave. AM works by varying the strength of the carrier in proportion to the waveform being sent. That waveform may, for instance, correspond to the sounds to be reproduced by a loudspeaker, or the light intensity of television pixels. This contrasts with frequency modulation, in which the frequency of the carrier signal is varied, and phase modulation, in which its phase is varied, by the modulating signal. / Crossed-Field Amplifier is a specialized vacuum tube, first introduced in the mid-1950s and frequently used as a microwave amplifier in very-high-power transmitters. |
