Definition of "Arrester" |
A device placed from phase to ground, or phase to phase, whose nonlinear impedance characteristics provide a path for high-amplitude transients. / Surge Arrester, or Lightning Arrester. Lightning arresters are devices for protecting many different pieces of equipment such as, power poles and towers, power transformers, and circuit breakers from damage from lightning strikes. A device that protects hardware, such as systems, subsystems, circuits, and equipment, from voltage or current surges produced by lightning or electromagnetic pulses. / A device placed from phase to ground, or phase to phase, whose nonlinear impedance characteristics provide a path for high amplitude transients. / A device which prevents a certain action. For example, a spark arrester is a special pipe mounted in the end of the exhaust pipe which prevents any burning gasses from coming out with the possible danger of igniting any combustibles in the area (i.e., setting the forest on fire). |
