Definition of "Automatic Gain Control" |
[AGC] A circuit used to limit variations in the output signal strength of a receiver. A process or means by which gain is automatically adjusted in a specified manner as a function of a specified parameter, such as received signal level. / Automatic gain control is a technique found in many electronic devices. The average or peak output signal level is used to adjust the gain to a suitable level, enabling the circuit to work satisfactorily with a greater range of input signal levels. For example, without Automatic gain control the sound emitted from an AM radio receiver would vary to an extreme extent from a weak to a strong signal; the AGC effectively reduces the volume if the signal is strong and raises it when it is weaker. / In computing, a device driver commonly referred to as simply a driver is a computer program that operates or controls a particular type of device that is attached to a computer. A driver provides a software interface to hardware devices, enabling operating systems and other computer programs to access hardware functions without needing to know precise details of the hardware being used. |
