Definition of "Backplane" |
A circuit card that contains two or more connectors of the same type which are connected together via discrete wires or copper traces on the circuit board to form an interface bus, which allows the boards to communicate with each other. Backplanes. / Backplane system is a group of electrical connectors in parallel with each other, so that each pin of each connector is linked to the same relative pin of all the other connectors forming a computer bus. It is used as a backbone to connect several printed circuit boards together to make up a complete computer system. Backplanes commonly use a printed circuit board but wire wrapped backplanes have also been used in minicomputers and high reliability applications. / An envelope detector is an electronic circuit that takes a high-frequency signal as input and provides an output which is the envelope of the original signal. The capacitor in the circuit stores up charge on the rising edge, and releases it slowly through the resistor when the signal falls. The diode in series rectifies the incoming signal, allowing current flow only when the positive input terminal is at a higher potential than the negative input terminal. / See backplane bus. |
