Definition of "Balun" |
An acronym for Balanced/Unbalanced. A device used to couple a balanced system to an un-balanced system. Read more Balun Definition. A balancing transformer. Also see RF Transformer Manufacturers. / Balun is an electrical device that converts between a balanced signal, two signals working against each other where ground is irrelevant and an unbalanced signal,a single signal working against ground or pseudo-ground. A balun can take many forms and may include devices that also transform impedances but need not do so. Transformer baluns can also be used to connect lines of differing impedance. The origin of the word balun is balance + unbalance. / Faraday shield is an enclosure formed by conducting material or by a mesh of such material. Such an enclosure blocks external static and non-static electric fields by channeling electricity through the mesh, providing constant voltage on all sides of the enclosure. / a network for the transformation from an unbalanced transmission line, system or device to a balanced line, system or device. Baluns are also used for impedance transformation. Derived from “balanced to unbalanced.” In antenna systems, baluns are used to connect dipole-type antennas to coaxial cable, to balance the current on dipole armatures, and to prevent currents from exciting the external surface of the coaxial shield. |
