Definition of "Brinell Testing Machine" |
A Brinell Testing Machine is used to measure the hardness of a material. It uses a round ball to indent the surface of the material with a constant force. The depth of the indentation is correlated to a Brinell Hardness Number (BHN) which is a comparative measure of material hardness. The typical Brinell test uses a 10mm steel ball and 29kN of force. For soft materials, less force is used; for harder materials, a tungsten carbide indenter is used. |
