Definition of "candela (cd)" |
The candela is the SI unit of luminous intensity. It is defined as the luminous intensity, in a given direction, of a source that emits monochromatic radiation of frequency 540 x 1012 hertz and that has a radiant intensity in that direction of 1/683 watt per steradian [1979] / unit of measurement for luminous intensity (illuminating power in lumens/sr). The luminous intensity of 1/60 of 1 cm² of projected area of a blackbody radiator operating at the temperature of solidification of platinum (2046K). Historically, the unit of measurement for the light emitted by one flame of a specified make of candle. |
