Definition of "Direct Gain" |
In direct-gain buildings, sunlight directly enters the home through the windows and is absorbed and stored in massive floors or walls. These buildings are elongated in the east-west direction, and most of their windows are on the south side. The area devoted to south windows varies throughout the country. It could be as much as 20% of the floor area in sunny cold climates, where advanced glazings or moveable insulation are recommended to prevent heat loss at night. These buildings have high insulation levels and added thermal mass for heat storage. / Direct gain is the heat from the sun being collected and contained in an occupied space. This heat can be retained by the building's thermal mass, or can be avoided with reflective materials. |
