Definition of "DSSS" |
Direct-Sequence Spread Spectrum: A transmission technology used in WLAN (wireless LAN) transmissions where a data signal at the sending station is combined with a higher data-rate bit sequence, or chipping code, that divides the user data according to a spreading ratio. See: "An Introduction to Direct-Sequence Spread-Spectrum Communications". / Direct-Sequence Spread Spectrum, / Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum is used in radion transmission, DSSS alters, or modulates, the signal by spreading it over a wider frequency, generating what seems like signal noise to anything except the device that is designed to reassemble the signal. / Direct sequence spread spectrum is one of two approaches to spread spectrum modulation for digital signal transmission over the airwaves. In direct sequence spread spectrum, the stream of information to be transmitted is divided into small pieces, each of which is allocated across to a frequency channel across the spectrum. / In telecommunications, direct sequence spread spectrum (DSSS) is a modulation technique. As with other spread spectrum technologies, the transmitted signal takes up more bandwidth than the information signal that modulates the carrier or broadcast frequency. The name 'spread spectrum' comes from the fact that the carrier signals occur over the full bandwidth (spectrum) of a device's transmitting frequency. Certain IEEE 802.11 standards use DSSS signaling. / Radio net, or simply ham net, is an “on-the-air” gathering of amateur radio operators. Most nets convene on a regular schedule and specific frequency, and are organized for a particular purpose, such as relaying messages, discussing a common topic of interest, in severe weather for example, during a Skywarn activation, emergencies, or simply as a regular gathering of friends for conversation. |
