Definition of "Encapsulation" |
In open systems, the technique used by layered protocols in which a lower layer protocol accepts a message from a higher layer protocol and places it in the data portion of a frame in the lower layer. A protective coating of plastic or other material applied over components [also refer to Potting]. A process for encasing a part or an assembly of discrete parts within a protective material which is generally not over 2.5 mm thick and does not require a mold or container. / Encapsulation is a method of designing modular communication protocols in which logically separate functions in the network are abstracted from their underlying structures by inclusion or information hiding within higher level objects. / In object-oriented programming, encapsulation is the inclusion within a program object of all the resources need for the object to function - basically, the methods and the data. The object is said to "publish its interfaces." Other objects adhere to these interfaces to use the object without having to be concerned with how the object accomplishes it. The idea is "don't tell me how you do it, just do it." An object can be thought of as a self-contained atom. The object interface consists of public methods and instantiated data.In telecommunication, encapsulation is the inclusion of one data structure within another structure so that the first data structure is hidden for the time being. For example, a TCP/IP-formatted data packet can be encapsulated within an ATM frame (another kind of transmitted data unit). Within the context of transmitting and receiving the ATM frame, the encapsulated packet is simply a stream of bits beween the ATM data that describes the transfer. / Digital Audio Broadcasting is also known as digital radio and high-definition radio, is audio broadcasting in which analog audio is converted into a digital signal and transmitted on an assigned channel in the AM or more usually FM frequency range. DAB is said to offer compact disc- quality audio on the FM broadcast band and to offer FM-quality audio on the AM broadcast band. / property of a program that describes the complete integration of data with legal process relating to the data. |
