Definition of "Firmware" |
A software program which is permanently stored in Non-Volatile Memory [ROM]. Software that is embedded in a hardware device that allows reading and executing the software, but does not allow modification, e.g., writing or deleting data by an end user. / Firmware is the combination of persistent memory and program code and data stored in it. / Software (programs or data) that has been written onto read-only memory (ROM). Firmware is a combination of software and hardware. ROMs, PROMs and EPROMs that have data or programs recorded on them are firmware. / Mainframe computers colloquially referred to as "big iron" are computers used primarily by corporate and governmental organizations for critical applications, bulk data processing such as census, industry and consumer statistics, enterprise resource planning and transaction processing. / software that cannot be modified by the end user. |
