Definition of "Fuse" |
An over-current protective device for opening a circuit by means of a conductor designed to melt and break when an excessive current flows along it for a sufficient time. The fuse comprises all the parts that form the complete device. / A device that has as its critical component a metal wire or strip that will melt when heated by a prescribed (design) amperage, creating an open in the circuit of which it is a part, thereby protecting the circuit from an over current condition. Note on operating AC Fuses in DC circuits; Maximum Fuse Voltage. Also see Fuse Manufacturers. A component designed for protection against the flow of current in a circuit exceeding specified values by utilizing the low melting point of a fusible element to open the circuit. A short length of fusible wire used to protect a circuit. / A device installed in the conductive path with a predetermined melting point coordinated to load current. Fuses are used to protect equipment from over current conditions and damage. / Fuse from the French fuser, Italian fuso, spindle is a type of low resistance resistor that acts as a sacrificial device to provide overcurrent protection, of either the load or source circuit. / A device often found in older homes designed to prevent overloads in electrical lines. This protects against fire. / Standard Frequency and time signal satellite service is a time signal service available in the United States which provides standard time and frequency signals, broadcast on very precise carrier frequencies by the U.S. Naval Observatory and the National Institute of Standards and Technology , formerly the National Bureau of Standards. / (1) an overcurrent device that employs one or more fusible elements in series. The fusible element(s) are designed to melt and interrupt the circuit when current above a threshold value flows in the circuit. |
