Definition of "Ground Island" |
A small copper layer contained on one or more layers of a Printed Wiring Board which is only connected to ground. A Ground Island is always much smaller than a ground plane. Ground Islands may be 100% copper fill or hatched to reduce the amount of copper. A notable exception is the RS-232 port, and some derivatives, which are asynchronous, but still have an external clock signal available, although not commonly used. |
