Definition of "Interrupt" |
A suspension of a process, such as the execution of a computer program, caused by an event external to that process, and performed in such a way that the process can be resumed. A break in the normal flow of a program, caused by an external signal that requires attention. / an input to a processor that signals the occurrence of an asynchronous event. The processor’s response to an interrupt is to save the current machine state and execute a predefined subprogram. The subprogram restores the machine state on exit, and the processor continues in the original program. |
