Definition of "Latency" |
A delay. The time interval between when a device requests access to a network and when it is granted access. / Latency is a time interval between the stimulation and response or from a more general point of view, as a time delay between the cause and the effect of some physical change in the system being observed. / In a network, latency, a synonym for delay, is an expression of how much time it takes for a packet of data to get from one designated point to another. In some usages (for example, AT&T), latency is measured by sending a packet that is returned to the sender and the round-trip time is considered the latency. In a computer system, latency is often used to mean any delay or waiting that increases real or perceived response time beyond the response time desired. Specific contributors to computer latency include mismatches in data speed between the microprocessor and input/output devices and inadequate data buffers. / Multiple frequency shift keying, is a method of signal modulation in which discrete audio tone bursts of various frequencies convey digital data. It was originally used by European and British government agencies in the mid 1900s. At that time it was called Piccolo, the name of the musical instrument whose high-pitched tones sound similar to an MFSK signal coming through the speaker of a radio receiver. / (1) total time taken for a bit to pass through the network from origin to destination. |
