Definition of "lightly doped drain (LDD)" |
in an MOS transistor, an extension to the source/drain diffusion that is separated slightly from the gate region which contains lower doping than that used for the source/drain diffusions. Since the source and drain diffusions are heavily doped, the lightly doped extension tends to increase the width of the depletion region around the drain which lowers the electric field intensity, to increase the breakdown voltage of the drain region of deep submicron devices. |
