Definition of "method of moments (MOM)" |
a common procedure used in order to solve integral and differential equations. The unknown function is expanded on a complete (but not necessarily orthogonal) set of functions, often called basis functions or expansion set. This expansion is truncated after a finite number of terms, N. The original functional equation is then tested, i.e., multiplied and integrated, by another set of functions, often called weighting or testing functions, hence reducing the original functional equation to a matrix equation suitable for numerical computation. The common choice of taking the same set of functions for the expansion and test is often referred to as Galerkin version of the moment method. |
