Definition of "Modulation" |
The process of impressing one signal, containing intelligence, onto another signal which is used as a carrier. The process of impressing intelligence upon a transmission medium, such as radio waves. The three general types of modulation include Amplitude, Frequency and Pulse modulation. The process, or result of the process, of varying a characteristic of a carrier, in accordance with an information-bearing signal. / Modulation is the addition of information to an electronic or optical signal carrier. Modulation can be applied to direct current , to alternating current, and to optical signals. One can think of blanket waving as a form of modulation used in smoke signal transmission . Morse code, invented for telegraphy and still used in amateur radio, uses a binary digital code similar to the code used by modern computers. / In electronics and telecommunications, modulation is the process of varying one or more properties of a periodic waveform, called the carrier signal (high frequency signal), with a modulating signal that typically contains information to be transmitted. In telecommunications, modulation is the process of conveying a message signal, for example a digital bit stream or an analog audio signal, inside another signal that can be physically transmitted. Modulation of a sine waveform transforms a baseband message signal into a passband signal. / Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers describes itself as the world's largest technical professional society promoting the development and application of electrotechnology and allied sciences for the benefit of humanity, the advancement of the profession, and the well-being of our members. / (1) variation of the amplitude or phase of an electromagnetic wave. |
