Definition of "MOV" |
Metal Oxide Varistor. A resistor that changes value with applied voltage. A varistor may also be called a VDR [Voltage Dependent Resistor]. / QuickTime Movie, Metal Oxide Varistor, / A solid state device which becomes conductive when the voltage across it exceeds a certain level. When the voltage exceeds the MOV's threshold, a heavy current flows through the MOV instead of the load. / Metal oxide varistor consists of two metal plates which serve as terminals. One terminal is usually grounded. A ceramic material, embedded with small grains of metal oxides, is sandwiched between the plates. / Testing them becomes an increasing challenge as these devices become more complex. A System-on-a-Chip design is typically built block by block; efficient testing is also best done block by block. / See metal-oxide varistor. |
