Definition of "Noise" |
An unwanted random signal (in the form of a voltage or current) in an electrical circuit making the information more difficult to identify. / Unwanted electrical signals. In reference to sound, an unwanted disturbance caused by spurious waves that originate from man-made or natural sources. In radar, erratic or random deflection or intensity of the indicator sweep that tends to mask small echo signals. Thermal noise, crosstalk, leakage currents, switching transients. An undesired disturbance within the frequency band of interest; the summation of unwanted or disturbing energy introduced into a communications system from man-made and natural sources. / Noise, in analog video and television, is a random dot pattern of static displayed when no transmission signal is obtained by the antenna receiver of television sets and other display devices. / The VT100 is a video terminal that was made by Digital Equipment Corporation. Its detailed attributes became the de facto standard for terminal emulators to emulate. / (1) any undesired disturbance, whether originating from the transmission medium or the electronics of the receiver it-self, that gets superimposed onto the original transmitted signal by the time it reaches the receiver. These disturbances tend to interfere with the information content of the original signal and will usually define the minimum detectable signal level of the receiver.(2) any undesired disturbance superimposed onto the original input signal of an electronic device; noise is generally categorized as being either external (disturbances superimposed onto the signal before it reaches the device) or internal (disturbances added to the signal by the receiving device itself). See also noise figure, noise power ratio. Some common examples of external noise are crosstalk and impulse noise as a result of atmospheric disturbances or manmade electrical devices. Some examples of internal noise include thermal noise, shot noise, 1/f noise, and intermodulation distortion. |
