Definition of "photorefractive effect" |
in the broad sense, any optical process in which the refractive index of a material system is modified by an optical field. More precisely, a particular nonlinear optical process in which loosely bound charges are redistributed within a crystalline material in response to an incident light field, thereby producing a static electric field, and modifying the refractive index of the material by the linear electro-optic effect. Changes in refractive index upon exposure to a light pattern in certain materials such as BSO, lithium niobate, and barium titanate. A manifestation of the electro-optic effect on a microscopic scale due to spatial charge transport. |
