Definition of "Preamplifier" |
[Preamp] An amplifier that raises the output of a low-level source for further processing without appreciable degradation of the signal-to-noise ratio. A first stage amplifier that feeds a higher power amplifier. An amplifier that accepts input levels in the 10mV range. / Preamp is an electronic amplifier that prepares a small electrical signal for further amplification or processing. A preamplifier is often placed close to the sensor to reduce the effects of noise and interference. / I Band is the range of radio frequencies from 8 GHz to 10 GHz in the system of letter designations for frequency bands used by the NATO for electronic countermeasure applications. This is equivalent to wavelengths between 3.75 cm and 3 cm. / an amplifier connected to a low level signal source to present suitable input and output impedances and to provide gain so that the signal may be further processed without appreciable degradation in the signal-to-noise ratio. A preamplifier may include provisions for equalization and frequency discrimination. |
