Definition of "RC time constant" |
(1) the time needed for signal traveling from an end to the other end of a wire is constant when the wire and the whole chip is scaled down. As the length of a wire shrinks by a factor of k and the cross-sectional area of the wire is reduced by a factor of k², the capacitance of the wire decreases by a factor of k while the resistance increases by a factor of k. The RC time remains constant, and thus the input charging time remains the same, independent of scaling. Consequently, the scaling down of the chip cannot increase the speed of the chip if wire is used. Optical interconnects can speed up the chip. |
