Definition of "redundancy" |
Duplication of elements in a system or installation to enhance the reliability or continuity of operation. / Redundancy is a system design in which a component is duplicated so if it fails there will be a backup. Redundancy has a negative connotation when the duplication is unnecessary or is simply the result of poor planning. / the use of parallel or series components in a system to reduce the possibility of failure. Similarly, referring to an increase in the number of components which can interchangeably perform the same function in a system. Sometimes it is referred to as hardware redundancy in the literature to differentiate from so called analytical redundancy in the field of FDI (fault detection and isolation/identification). Redundancy can increase the system reliability. |
