Definition of "Solenoid" |
A coil of wire wound uniformly on a cylindrical former, having a length which is large compared with its radius. / An electro-magnetic device that changes electrical energy into mechanical motion; based upon the attraction of a movable iron plunger to the core of an electromagnet. See Relay Manufacturers. / A solenoid is a coil of insulated or enameled wire wound on a rod-shaped form made of solid iron, solid steel, or powdered iron. Devices of this kind can be used as electromagnets, as inductors in electronic circuits, and as miniature wireless receiving antennas. / An electrically operated magnetic device used to operate some unit. A movable iron core is placed inside a coil of wire which moves because of magnetic attraction when electric current is fed to the coil. When current flows through the coil, the core will attempt to center itself in the coil. In so doing, the core will exert considerable force on anything it is connected to. / Duplex data transmission means that data can be transmitted in both directions on a signal carrier at the same time. / (1) a wound cylindrical and magnetic material assembly used typically for producing linear motions. |
