Definition of "Substrate" |
The physical material upon which a photovoltaic cell is made. / The supporting material upon or within which the elements of a microcircuit or integrated circuit are fabricated or attached. Mounting surface for integrated circuits. May be semiconductor or insulator material depending on type of IC. The material underneath the magnetic coating of a hard disk. / In biochemistry, a substrate is a molecule upon which an enzyme acts. Enzymes catalyze chemical reactions involving the substrate(s). In the case of a single substrate, the substrate bonds with the enzyme active site, and an enzyme-substrate complex is formed. The substrate is transformed into one or more products, which are then released from the active site. / (1) a dielectric or semiconductor slab over which active devices, planar transmission lines, and circuit components are fabricated. This can be a PCB, a ceramic, or a silicon or other semiconductor wafer that has electronic components interconnected to perform a circuit function. |
