Definition of "thyratron" |
(1) gas-filled triode in which the voltage on the grid can trigger ionization of the gas in the tube. Once the gas is ionized, current flows from cathode to anode until the potential across the two falls below a certain level. In Linac (a linear accelerator), the thyratrons are used as high-voltage relays in the chopper power supplies and in the RF modulators to trigger the ignitrons. |
