Definition of "Tunnel Diode" |
A heavily doped semiconductor device that has high gain and fast switching capabilities. A pn diode which has a negative resistance characteristic. Also See Negative-Resistance Element. Refer to Definition of Diode Terms. / A tunnel diode or Esaki diode is a type of semiconductor that is capable of very fast operation, well into the microwave frequency region, made possible by the use of the quantum mechanical effect called tunneling. / A telephone office that makes connections between local offices in an area where there is such a high density of local offices that it would be uneconomical to make direct connections between them. Also known as tandem office. / (1) a PN diode structure that uses band to band tunneling to produce a terminal negative differential resistance, also called an Esaki diode after its inventor L. Esaki. |
