Definition of "weak localization" |
the name given to a process of self-interference of carriers in a mesoscopic system in which the transport is quasi-ballistic. A significant fraction of the carriers can be scattered by impurities back to their initial position in phase space, at which point they interfere with each other leading to an additional resistance. Since the scattering path can be traversed in either direction (which are time reversed paths of one another), it is said that the additional resistance is made up of continual interference between the two time-reversed paths. A small magnetic field breaks up this equivalence of the two paths and eliminates the weak localization contribution to the resistance. |
