How transients are produced in our system?
They can be generated by both internal and external sources.
EXTERNAL SOURCE?
1) Most common external source is lightning. Lightning strikes on power lines and transients are introduce in it. It isn't necessary that lightning should strike directly on power lines. Even if it strikes near the line than transient can be induce in line.
2) They are also generated due to normal utility operation such as switching of loads, switching of capacitor banks etc
INTERNAL SOURCE?
1) Each time you turn on/off a load specially inductive load. You induce a transient in the system. Devices such as generator, motor, printer, AC, inverter pumps etc are common transient generator.
2) Transient can also be generated by arcing in fuses and breakers
