STEPPER MOTOR The stepper motor is an important electromechanical component used in digital servos such as printers, tape drives, capstan drives, numerically controlled machine tools, and process control systems. The input to the motor is a pulse and the output is an angular rotation of the shaft through a fixed precise angle. Stepper motors can be used to control the position and/or velocity of the load. The response is one to one, that is, one step turn for each pulse. So the error is of single step only less than 5% and not cumulative. Feedback is not necessary to determine the position of shaft. D/A conversion is eliminated when used with digital computer. The following definitions are used with regard to stepper motors:
