Definition of "absolute encoder" |
An Absolute Encoder maintains position information when power is removed from the system. The position of the encoder is available immediately on applying power. The relationship between the encoder value and the physical position of the controlled machinery is set at assembly; the system does not need to return to a calibration point to maintain position accuracy. / an optical device mounted to the shaft of a motor consisting of a disc with a pattern and light sources and detectors. The combination of light detectors receiving light depends on the position of the rotor and the pattern employed (typically the Gray code). Thus, absolute position information is obtained. The higher the resolution required, the larger the number of detectors needed. |
