Definition of "bits per pixel" |
the number of bits used to represent each pixel in a digital image. Typical grayscale images have 8 bits per pixel, giving 256 different gray levels. True color images have 24 bits per pixel, or 8 bits for each of the red, green, and blue pixels. Compressed image sizes are often represented in bits per pixel, i.e., the total number of bits used to represent the compressed image divided by the total number of pixels. |
