Definition of "branch target buffer (BTB)" |
a buffer that is used to hold the history of previous branch paths taken during the execution of individual branch instructions. The BTB is used to improve prediction of the correct branch path whenever a branch instruction is encountered. The branch target buffer or branch target cache contains the address of each recent branch instruction (or the instructions themselves), the address of the branch “target” and a record of recent branch directions. The Pentium BTB is organized as an associative cache memory, with the address of the branch instruction as a tag; it stores the most recent destination address plus a two-bit history field representing the recent history of the instruction. |
