Definition of "Break-before-Make" |
Break-Before-Make: A switch that is configured to break (open) the first set of contacts before engaging (closing) the new contacts. This prevents the momentary connection of the old and new signal paths. / Switch contacts which interrupt one circuit before establishing the previous one. / In a switch where the contacts remain in one state unless actuated, such as a push-button switch, the contacts can either be normally open until closed by operation of the switch, or normally closed and opened by the switch action. A switch with both types of contact is called a changeover switch. These may be "make-before-break" which momentarily connects both circuits, or may be "break-before-make"which interrupts one circuit before closing the other. / In telecommunication, Hamming code are a family of linear error-correcting codes that generalize the Hamming-code invented by Richard Hamming in 1950. Hamming codes can detect up to two-bit errors or correct one-bit errors without detection of uncorrected errors. By contrast, the simple parity code cannot correct errors, and can detect only an odd number of bits in error. |
