Definition of "Burn-In" |
The process of screening out marginal component parts by exposing them to elevated temperatures and voltage stress for a specified duration of time. This test is performed to eliminate marginal devices or those with defects resulting from manufacturing aberrations that are evidenced as time and stress dependent failures. / Burn-in is the process by which components of a system are exercised prior to being placed in service and often, prior to the system being completely assembled from those components. / Hybrid IC is a miniaturized electronic circuit constructed of individual devices, such as semiconductor devices example transistors and diodes and passive components, example resistors, inductors, transformers, and capacitors, bonded to a substrate or printed circuit board PCB. Hybrid circuits are often encapsulated in epoxy, as shown in the photo. / component testing where infant mortality failures (defective or weak parts) are screened out by testing at elevated voltages and temperatures for a specified length of time. |
