Definition of "Cladding" |
The metal tubes containing oxide fuel pellets in a reactor core. / The dielectric material surrounding the core of an optical fiber. A low refractive material that surrounds the core of the optic fiber and protects against scattering. Fiber cladding might be glass or plastic. / One or more layers of materials of lower refractive index, in intimate contact with a core material of higher refractive index, which causes light to be confined to the core of the fiber by total internal reflection at the boundary between the two. / A covering or coating on a structure or material. / the optical material that concentrically surrounds the fiber core and provides optical insulation and protection for the core. The refractive index of the cladding must be lower than that of the core material so that optical power is guided through the fiber by total internal reflection at the core-cladding boundary. |
