Definition of "Delta Modulation" |
[DM] A form of Analog-to-digital signal conversion, only an increase or decrease of the signal amplitude from the previous sample is sent whereas a no-change condition causes the modulated signal to remain at the same 0 or 1 state of the previous sample. / a special case of differential pulse code modulation (DPCM) where the digital code-out represents the change, or slope, of the analog input signal, rather than the absolute value of the analog input signal. A “1” indicates a rising slope of the input signal. A “0” indicates a falling slope of the input signal. The sampling rate is dependent on the derivative of the signal, since a rapidly changing signal would require a rapid sampling rate for acceptable performance. |
