Definition of "Dumb Terminal" |
An asynchronous terminal that does not use a transmission control protocol and sends or receives data sequentially one character at a time. A monitor/keyboard combination that used RS232 to access an embedded computer, as in a VT-100 terminal. / The function of a terminal is confined to display and input of data; a device with significant local programmable data processing capability may be called a smart terminal or fat client. A terminal that depends on the host computer for its processing power is called a dumb terminal or thin client. / A display monitor that has no processing capabilities. A dumb terminal is simply an output device that accepts data from the CPU. In contrast, a smart terminal is a monitor that has its own processor for special features, such as bold and blinking characters. Dumb terminals are not as fast as smart terminals, and they do not support as many display features, but they are adequate for most applications. / In physics, a wave is disturbance or oscillation that travels through matter/space, accompanied by a transfer of energy. Wave motion transfers energy from one point to another, often with no permanent displacement of the particles of the medium that is, with little or no associated mass transport. |
