Definition of "electro-optic effect" |
an optical phenomenon in certain types of crystals in which the application of an applied electric field results in a change in the dielectric tensor, or equivalently a change in the refractive index of the medium. In the linear electro-optic effect, the resulting change in refractive index is proportional to the electric field strength, in the quadratic electro-optic effect, the resulting change in refractive index is proportional to the square of the electric field strength. The linear electric-optic effect was first studied by F. Pockels in 1893. |
