Definition of "Electrolyte" |
An electrically conductive fused salt or a solution where the charge is carried by ionic movement. / A solution of a substance that is capable of conducting electricity. An electrolyte may be in the form of either a liquid or a paste. / In a lead acid battery, the electrolyte is sulfuric acid diluted with water. It is a conductor and also a supplier of hydrogen and sulfate ions for the reaction. / An electrolyte is a substance that ionizes when dissolved in suitable ionizing solvents such as water. This includes most soluble salts, acids, and bases. Some gases, such as hydrogen chloride, under conditions of high temperature or low pressure can also function as electrolytes. / (1) current-conducting solution between two electrodes or plates of a capacitor, at least one of which is covered by a dielectric. |
