Definition of "envelope delay" |
The propagation time delay undergone by the envelope of an amplitude modulated signal as it passes through a filter. Envelope delay is proportional to the slope of the curve of phase shift as a function of frequency. / Digitizing or digitization is the representation of an object, image, sound, document or a signal, usually an analog signal by a discrete set of its points or samples. The result is called digital representation or, more specifically, a digital image, for the object, and digital form, for the signal. Strictly speaking, digitizing means simply capturing an analog signal in digital form. For a document the term means to trace the document image or capture the corners where the lines end or change direction. / the time it takes for a specific reference point on the envelope of a modulated wave to propagate between two points in a circuit or transmission system. In a time invariant system, the envelope delay is the derivative (i.e., rate of change) of phase (in radians) with respect to angular frequency (also in radians) as the envelope of the signal passes between two points in the system. Also referred to as time delay. |
