Definition of "extended memory" |
in PCs, the memory located over the first megabyte of memory. This kind of memory is seen in the PC as continuous. Operating systems such asWindows NT, LINUX, and OS/2 are capable of working in protected mode, and thus at 32 bits. When MS-DOS is adopted to allow the exploitation of this memory as EMS, special software drivers have to be used. This overcomes the limit of 640 kb imposed by the real-mode and adopted by MS-DOS. |
