Definition of "Half Adder" |
A circuit that adds two 1-bit binary numbers and output a sum bit and a carry bit, but does not have a provision to accept a carry input from a previous adder stage. Two Half Adders can be combined to form a Full Adder. / The half adder adds two single binary digits A and B. It has two outputs, sum 'S' and carry 'C'. The carry signal represents an overflow into the next digit of a multi-digit addition. The value of the sum is 2C + S. The simplest half-adder design, pictured on the right, incorporates an XOR gate for S and an AND gate for C. With the addition of an OR gate to combine their carry outputs, two half adders can be combined to make a full adder. / In electronics, a clipper is a device designed to prevent the output of a circuit from exceeding a predetermined voltage level without distorting the remaining part of the applied waveform. / a logic circuit that produces the sum and carry outputs for two input signals. A half adder has no carry input. |
