Definition of "Inrush Current" |
A momentary input current surge, measured during the initial turn-on of the power supply. This current reduces to a lower steady-state current once the input capacitors charge. Hotswap controllers or other forms of protection are often used to limit inrush current, because uncontrolled inrush can damage components, lower the available supply voltage to other circuits, and cause system errors. / A higher current that occurs when a device is first turned on, or when first connected to a circuit. A surge current that occurs only during an initial brief time while a component stabilizes or warms up [in the case of a lamp]. / A momentary input current surge, measured during the initial turn on of the power supply. The inrush current may be larger in magnitude than the steady-state full-load current. The transient response is short in time and the electrical equipment generally supports the inrush current, provided it does not happen frequently. For a single transient, the thermal limit of the equipment is not reached, but if it is switched on and switched off several times within a short period, the temperature can rise very quickly. In case of transformers, the inrush current is not sinusoidal even if the voltage is due to the hysteresis of the ferromagnetic core. |
