Definition of "Ionosphere" |
The most important region of the atmosphere extending from 31 miles to 250 miles above sea level. Contains four cloud-like layers that affect radio waves. / Ionosphere is a region of the upper atmosphere, from about 85 km to 600 km altitude, and includes the thermosphere and parts of the mesosphere and exosphere. It is distinguished because it is ionized by solar radiation. It plays an important part in atmospheric electricity and forms the inner edge of the magnetosphere. It has practical importance because, among other functions, it influences radio propagation to distant places on the Earth. / Electrostatic Discharge is the release of static electricity when two objects come into contact. Familiar examples of ESD include the shock we receive when we walk across a carpet and touch a metal doorknob and the static electricity we feel after drying clothes in a clothes dryer. A more extreme example of ESD is a lightening bolt. While most ESD events are harmless, it can be an expensive problem in many industrial environments. / consists of several layers of the upper atmosphere, ranging in altitude from 100 to 300 km, containing ionized particles. The ionization is due to the effect of solar radiation, particularly ultraviolet and cosmic radiation, on gas particles. The ionosphere serves as reflecting layers for radio (sky) waves. |
