Definition of "isotope" |
An atomic form of an element having a particular number of neutrons. Different isotopes of an element have the same number of protons but different numbers of neutrons and hence different atomic mass, e.g.,. U-235, U-238. Some isotopes are unstable and decay to form isotopes of other elements. / An atomic form of an element having a particular number of neutrons. Some isotopes are unstable and decay to form isotopes of other elements. / Isotope are variants of a particular chemical element such that while all isotopes of a given element have the same number of protons in each atom, they differ in neutron number. Thus, different isotopes of a single element occupy the same position on the periodic table. The number of protons within the atom's nucleus is called atomic number and is equal to the number of electrons in the neutral (un-ionized) atom. / a variant of an element whose nucleus contains a greater or lesser number of neutrons but the same number of protons asthe base element. |
