Definition of "linguistic variable" |
variable for which values are not numbers, but words or sentences in a natural or artificial language. In fuzzy set theory, the linguistic values (or terms) of a linguistic variable are represented by fuzzy sets in an universe of discourse. In the example shown in the figure, the linguistic variable is speed, the universe of discourse is associated to the base variable s, and the fuzzy sets (through the plot of their membership functions) associated to the linguistic values low, medium, and high. |
