Definition of "Local Area Network" |
[LAN] A network which only operates or spans a small area, although there is no strict size to the operational area. A network which only operates within a particular building. A data communications system that (a) lies within a limited spatial area, (b) has a specific user group, (c) has a specific topology, and (d) is not a public switched telecommunications network, but may be connected to one. / Local Area Network is a computer network that interconnects computers within a limited area such as a home, school, computer laboratory, or office building using network media. The defining characteristics of LANs, in contrast to wide area networks, include their smaller geographic area, and non-inclusion of leased telecommunication lines. / A local area network (LAN) is a computer network that spans a relatively small area.
